A body of work that often guides our Registered Behaviour Analysts is Hanley’s research on sleep, feeding, compassionate care, and practical functional assessment.

These are fantastic resources for anyone working in the field and wanting to further their understanding of the research or for caregivers who want to learn more.

All of bitKIDS RBAs recently took the course Practical Functional Assessment and Skill Based Treatment summarized by Corinna Bittle.

One of the overarching themes of the training was that, as clinicians, we should be running assessment and sessions with 3 priorities top of mind:

  1. Safety
  2. Televisability  (dignity)
  3. Rapport

All three are necessary and can guide everything we do. They allow us to ensure our environment and everyone in it is safe so that we can proudly stand behind what we do and that the families and children we support will trust that we are listening to their words, their body language, and their actions. If we keep these priorities top of mind, they will guide us in moments of uncertainty.

Beyond these values, the course provided us a clear framework for assessing problem behaviour and creating a plan that again allows us to keep these values at the forefront. It is a compassionate and effective approach and we are all excited to embrace it.
