Building the Future of ABA

Building the Future of ABA

How bitKIDS Partners with Colleges

At bitKIDS, we know that building strong services for children and families means investing not only in today’s care—but in tomorrow’s clinicians.

That’s why we are proud to partner with leading post-secondary programs, including Mohawk College, Conestoga College, and Algonquin College, to provide meaningful, high-quality field placement opportunities.

These partnerships are more than student placements—they are a critical part of strengthening the future of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA).

Why Field Placement Matters

Students in Autism and Behavioural Science (ABS) programs complete extensive hands-on field placement hours in real-world settings, working with individuals with autism and other developmental needs.

These placements are intentionally designed to bridge theory and practice. Students come prepared with a strong foundation in ABA and gain experience:

  • Observing the implementation of behaviour plans
  • Supporting skill development
  • Working as part of interdisciplinary teams
  • Learning how to support families and caregivers

At bitKIDS, we provide the environment where that learning comes to life.

A True Partnership: College, Student, and Clinic

Field placements are not one-sided—they are collaborative by design.

Programs such as the Autism and Behavioural Science Graduate Certificate emphasize a three-way partnership between:

  • The college
  • The placement site (like bitKIDS)
  • The student

Within our clinic, students from Mohawk, Conestoga, and Algonquin are paired with experienced mentors and receive:

  • Structured orientation and training
  • Ongoing feedback and supervision
  • Opportunities to participate in real clinical routines

This mentorship model is essential—fieldwork is where students begin to develop their professional identity and clinical judgment.

Learning by Doing—Safely and Ethically

Students at bitKIDS are integrated into the team while still being supported learners.

They:

  • Participate in daily routines and programming
  • Contribute to session preparation and data collection
  • Observe and practice ABA strategies under supervision

At the same time, the structure ensures:

  • Students are never working independently beyond their scope
  • They are supported by trained clinicians
  • Client safety and quality of care remain the priority

This balance protects clients while maximizing learning.

Expanding Access to ABA in a Limited Workforce

Across Ontario, the demand for ABA services continues to grow—while the workforce struggles to keep pace.

Partnerships with institutions like Mohawk, Conestoga, and Algonquin help address this challenge by:

  • Creating hands-on training opportunities in real service settings
  • Increasing student confidence and readiness for employment
  • Building a pipeline of skilled, ethical practitioners

Many students transition directly into roles within the field after graduation, helping agencies like bitKIDS expand services and reduce waitlists.

Disseminating High-Quality ABA

Field placements are also one of the most effective ways to disseminate best practices in ABA.

Students bring:

  • The most current, evidence-based knowledge
  • Fresh perspectives and questions
  • A strong commitment to ethical, client-centred care

In turn, clinics provide:

  • Real-world application
  • Clinical mentorship
  • Exposure to diverse learners and needs

This exchange strengthens not just individual learners—but the entire field.

Growing Together

We are grateful to partner with Mohawk College, Conestoga College, and Algonquin College to support the next generation of behaviour therapists.

By investing in student learning today, we are:

  • Strengthening families’ access to services
  • Supporting a sustainable workforce
  • Advancing the quality of ABA across our community

At bitKIDS, teaching is part of our mission—because better-trained clinicians mean better outcomes for the children and families we serve.
